| | (Post a comment) » NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS Performance PreviewLooking for a card that delivers performance greater than a GeForce 6600 GT but don't want to spend a ton of money in the process? If so, you may want to check out NVIDIA's GeForce 7600 GS. The 7600 GS is based on the same GPU inside NVIDIA's GeForce 7600 GT, only it runs a little slower. The result? A card that delivers impressive performance for less than $150. Read more about the GeForce 7600 GS in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I can see the asus 7600gs for sale now. But it says nothing about
hdcp on asus web page. Can you confirm that it has hdcp? The picture
shows a dvi port. So I guess its supposed to have dvi-hdcp then?
Weird that they dont mention hdcp on the specs then.

Average, very average. As usual nVidia wins a few scores, ATI wins
a few scores. Not really newsworthy.
If you like putting your money in engineering, go with ATI.
If you like putting your money in advertising, go with nVidia.
Otherwize you have the same card, no matter what level you buy.

Newegg has two cards available immediately. One of them is actually
an XFX overclocked card at 500 core/900 memory. I'm quite curious
how much closer that gets it to the compared cards, especially
because it's only $143 right now.

Yeah tomshardware has a bunch of benchmarks showing the 6600gt
whipping the pants off the 6800 in games at medium resolution and no
aa and af on. It seems to me that this is the type of situation
where fast memory/narrow bus beats slower memory/wider bus.

No. Nvidia can't do it this way simply because the die size on the
G73 GPU is not large enough to support the traces necessary to
support a 256Bit Wide Memory Interface. Die size of around ~200mm2
is needed, while this GPU only is 125mm2 so no.
And what matters is performance I don't see any situations where the
6800 GS beat the 7600 GT thanks to Geforce 7 Shaders and higher
clocks short of some benches on TechReport at the insane resolution
of 1920x1440.

I've modified the conclusion a little to reflect this.
The beauty of it all though is that the reader is able to come to
their own conclusions.
You guys can see the features, price point, benchmarks across
multiple resolutions and games, etc, and then decide for yourselves
if the card is right for you. That's the goal at least...
#9: Yes. And yes, on a lower-end GPU, CPU scaling is good to have in
there, which is why I did it for the 7800 GS AGP. Unfortunately I
just didn't have that kind of time for this article. Again, I didn't
even know this GPU existed a week ago.

The 7600 series is great for the price, but I still confused as to
why NVidia chokes the memory bandwidth on them, particularly the
7600GT.
The 7600GT's memory runs at 1.4Ghz, which is quite high for a
midrange card, but wouldn't it be cheaper to use 256-bit DDR/DDR2
running at lower speeds?? Anything over 700mhz would be a bandwidth
improvment at 256-bit.

Well I it would really depend on the margins this time around.
Half Life 2 will be is a tie as ATI win the AA + AF benches while
Nvidia wins the HDR ones.
ATI wins Battlefield 2 decently and pulls further away as resolution
increases. ATI wins Call of Duty 2 decently too, bt maintains
constant margins.
Quake 4 favors Nvidia by a huge margin, same thing with LOMAC albeit
with slightly reduced margins. Pacific Fighters less so but still
favors Nvidia.
It's basically a tie in F.E.A.R.
So you can recommend the X1600 XT for Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty
2, while anything OpenGL is Nvidia, F.E.A.R and HL2, either one
works well.

This is such a nice card slightly better then 6600 GT performance
for the same MSRP (149US), Nvidia's really executing on all fronts.
Nvidia's line is really good this time in terms of production cost.
I think all that is left is to replace the 6600 DDR2 with the 7300
GT, and the Geforce 6 Series can basically be put to the grave.
