| | (Post a comment) » Oblivion ReviewThe gates to Oblivion have opened, daedra are spilling forth from their domain and trying to destroy your world. And you must save it. No, actually, you don't have to. This is The Elder Scrolls, after all. If you'd rather become grandmaster of the Thieves Guild and ignore the world peril, you can do it - and be stylin' in the finest-looking game this year. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Hi- I really help from anyone with a detailed knowledge of oblivion.
After playing Morrowind, I bought Oblivion, and it doesnt work on my
PC. Ive realised I probably need to upgrade certain components, I
just dont know WHAT.
Here are my specs:
Computer-a Compaq, Presario 2500 with Microsoft XP
Processor- Intel(R) Celeron (R)CPU216
Speed- 2590 MHZ
5 GB free space
RAM- 256 MB
Video Card- Raedon IGP 345M
From what I can tell, with my limited knowledge, is that I need to
get more RAM, about 300 more, and a different video card. If someone
could tell me what the cheapest and the best video cards for
Oblivion are, and where you can get em, and anything else I need to
know- I would REALLY appreciate it! Please help me, Im dying to
play! You can email me at gaurakaruna@hotmail.com

While I do not agree with the reviewer on a number of technical
points brought forward in this review, there is one thing I know for
a fact is wrong.
The size of the in-game world. He states here that Morrowind was
quite larger, which is a very clever illusion by the mappers. The
whole Morrowind-map was 10 square miles, but the island covered
about 6 of it. 6 square miles. Not quite the same 16 square miles as
Oblivion, is it?
Though I have to agree that Morrowind does seem larger, that is,
until you know the tricks. The main trick is the huge #!& mountain
in the middle of the map, and the mountain ranges that sprout from
it, dividing the map into clearly seperable zones, if you look on a
map.
Oblivion, on the other side, is more open and has a more realistic
geography with larger valleys and open areas, and with mountains
only on the borders to other provinces. If you would, as you pretty
much can in Oblivion, travel straight across the map, Morrowind,
from north to south, did not take many minutes to cross. This was
done with levitation and speed spells, which gave you around regular
running speed, but in the air.

I'm getting dangerous readings on my geekometer. I urge everyone to
uninstall this game immediately and seek shelter underground until
further notice.

Yet another boring RPG. This genre hasn't seen anything new or
exciting since Ultima IV.

I think your 9500 pro will really, really be the bottleneck there. I
honestly don't think the game will run decent with it, since it's
the absolute minimum.
I'm running it on a mainstream card (x1600xt which costs what in the
US - $120?) and it runs pretty smooth at 1280x1024 HDR medium / high
settings. Like you, I haven't been everywhere yet, and the only area
where my FPS really drop < 5 fps is around Anvil with a lot of
dense high foliage.
But overall, runs smooth (never enabled FPS but I'm guessing >
25).
