| | (Post a comment) » PS3 Price Announcement Misinterpreted?Next Generation is reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is calling reports of a 500 euro price point for the Playstation 3 a "misinterpretation" of what was said during a French radio interview with Sony exec George Fornay. Here is a snip with a quote from Sony spokesperson Nick Sharples:
"At no point did he ever refer to a specific price for [the PS3]. He was referring to a 500 dollar price that the interviewer had questioned to him, explaining the relative value of the PS3 console in relation to Blu-ray disc players on the high-end and consoles on the low-end," Sharples said. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

$600? So now they sell what percentage of fewer machines? Which
means fewer games get sold which 1)P.O. the game makers and 2)Means
fewer revenue streams coming into Sony. Cute.
$750 PS3=$400 Xbox360? How can you say that when no one has even
seen the PS3 yet? "Rah rah rah gooooo Microsoft!"

Who said that?
The original plan was for PS3 to have DUAL-HDMI outputs. That's two,
not zero.
You know, for all those millions of people who have 2 HDTVs in the
same room. It was a stupid idea. But then these are the same
geniuses who thought a handheld needed 7.1 surround sound.

i got an xbox 360 and im really happy with it thus far, if the ps3
rumor is true you wont have many ppl buying them in the us atleast,
700 for a console is painfully expensive even if it cost sony 100 to
200 more to produce it.but for me im gunna enjoy what the xbox 360
has to offer till intel quad core kingsfields come out next year
with windows vista and the next gen gpu's

Sony is going to lose the format war again. They lost with Betamax
and UMD. Apple knows that it can go either way...that's why they
are on the board of directors for Blu-Ray and a member of the DVD
Forum, which backs HD DVD. If you like the games for the games for
PS3 then buy it...don't base your purchase on the built in Blu-Ray
player will become obsolete.

All these specs can be treat as a load of crap. These so call
web-analysts were confident that the ps3 will not have a hdmi
connector, well 2 weeks ago Sony stated there are HDMI plugs

Estimates of Sony's cost to produce the PS3 are around $800 to $900
respectively. Sony can't afford to take a $400-$500 bath on the
price to get the PS3 to the $400 price point. They would have to
sell an enormous amount of games and accessories to recoup what they
lost just in the console. If they can get to it, don't expect
extras like the Hard Drive, Wireless Controller, Remote Control, or
even possibly any controller at all. I'd expect at under $500 you'd
have to spend an extra $250 just to get what the $400 XBox 360
gives. Blue Ray production isn't cheap, and with all of the online
game rental companies, Sony isn't going to make as much as they used
to on sales -> especially with the higher price point. I believe
the $600 US was probably spot on, but Sony doesn't want to admit it
because, if it was true, those waiting on a PS3 might flock to the
360.

Well I posted on the original story that this was fiction. No way
they release their pricing strategy like that. I've said $499 for
some time, but I think we may see a $449,$479 or even an Xbox360
like "regular meal" and the "full size meal".
I think we see $449 if Sony is worried about the Xbox360. $479 if
the retailers pressure Sony hoping to spur Xmas sales. $499 if Sony
feels like the demand is still high.
Anything in the $500-600 range is going to scare people unless Sony
finds their back against the wall. Over $500 means more money having
to be poured into advertising, convincing people that the P3 is
worth paying that much for. Sony probably figures they may as well
take the hit in production with a $499 price, rather than spending
money and gambling on convincing the consumer that $549+ is a deal.
Anything over $600 is suicide.
