| | (Post a comment) » Xfire Acquired By Viacom For $102 MillionViacom has announced that it has purchased Xfire, the gaming oriented instant messaging-chat software company for $102 million in cash. Xfire will now become part of Viacom's MTV Networks unit. Here is a snip:
Judy McGrath, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MTV Networks, said, "Online gaming is an intensely social phenomenon, with millions of young adults around the globe interacting constantly, not only to play, but also to share information and evaluate games. Xfire is the leading gamer community platform, and we look forward to integrating its services and user base into our multiplatform strategy at MTV Networks, which already includes assets like Neopets, GameTrailers, iFilm and more. We are thrilled to welcome Mike Cassidy, Chris Kirmse, Adam Boyden and the rest of Xfire's management team to the table."
Mike Cassidy, Chief Executive Officer of Xfire, said, "We can think of no better home for Xfire than MTV Networks, a company that's as user-obsessed as we are. We look forward to working together with a shared commitment to giving teens and young adults the best in digital entertainment, and the operational flexibility to maintain the integrity of the Xfire brand for our users. Having the benefit of MTV Networks' marketing expertise and the power of their brands behind us will allow us to reach more users in more countries, across more platforms. We're excited to work with Judy McGrath and everyone at MTV Networks to continue to deliver even more for our members." | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

From Xfire...
We're definitely still working out all the details of how this will
affect our development process, what sort of cross promotions we
should do, and how much we'll be operating with MTV on a day-to-day
basis. One really nice thing is that they've said again and again
(and I know we've said it here too) is that they really just want us
to keep doing what we're doing. They'll bring some sophisticated
marketing and ad sales to the table - for the same slot, the little
banner at the top of the client, they'll probably be able to get
people to pay many multiples of what we got. And with some strategic
help from the rest of MTV's properties , Xfire could go from
4,000,000 to HUGE in the next year...and then suddenly we're looking
even more valuable.

Also... I doubt this purchase will be anything but good for Xfire.
More money = more development time = more features ...
Personally, I would love to not have to use Ventrilo.

Viacom owns Comedy Central, Dreamworks, Paramount, Nickelodeon,
Spike, and a mess of other huge entertainment thingys. If you feel
like you want to boycott something, you should boycott everything
owned by Viacom. I don't know about you, but I would sell my soul
for 102 million. (GameTrailers doesn't have ads... so that's a good
sign.)

This is gonna completely suck.....Viacom/MTV/Screw Up Anything
Remotely Popular will completely ruin Xfire. Imagine an
advertisement popping up when you load Xfire for "My Sweet
Sixteen". Oh yes, that's what hundreds of thousands of gamers
who are about to play a game want to see. Just like MTV ruined
music, it will try to ruin gaming (or at least gaming
communication). At least I still have Teamspeak...that is until
Apple buys it and embeds it into ITunes and charges me .99 cent per
minute to use it.....

First Yahoo gets All Seeing Eye and now this. Can't I just have a
game server browser that doesn't try to sell me something, collect
my personal information, and charge me a monthly fee? At least I
got grandfathered into ASE since I paid for a lifetime subscription.
