» Oblivion Athlon 64 CPU Performance

Wondering if Oblivion truly takes advantage of dual-core processors? And if so, by how much? Does L2 cache size play a role in performance, and what clock speeds yield the biggest performance improvements? If you've ever asked yourself any of those questions, or you're just wondering how 10 different Athlon 64, FX, and X2 processors perform in comparison to one another, you'll want to check out today's article!

Still noone had benched the NPC's and AI effect. Hopefully Brandon
will be the first.

Anandtech has posted a set of CPU/GPU benchmarks, and they bring
about quite a bit more variability in CPU-related performance.

They also report more FRAPS variability than FiringSquad, but that
isn't enough to explain the differences. Could it be that by
focusing too much on getting low FRAPS variability, the FS
benchmarks didn't bench all there was to benchmark?

Brandon, did you use fraps or something that would allow you to
answer the following question that was not addressed in the
review... did the addtional computational power affect the moemntary
drops in fps that would not affect the average, but would obviously
affect the gameplay?

Min fps would've been nice to know for the higher resolutions as the
min fps across the board would be dependant on CPU and GPU if the
very lowest point at lax setting is the same as when the VPU is
taxed then you'd know it's more of a CPU limitation and be able to
see if all the setups experience the same drop, which should be very
noticeable on a histogram.

There is a point in AGP for two reasons, PCIe cards are not all
clocked the same as their AGP variants, and AGP cards can't access
system resources the way PCIe cards can.

Of course if you're looking to add another CPU to show that the
entire game is VPU limited at higher resolutions for the 90th time,
sure that's more useful. AthlonXPs would at least make more sense
than Semp754s etc since people still use that for ESIV, just check
the elderscrolls forums to see what people are most concerned about,
and that's getting their old rig working for Oblivion without too
much money or having to resort to Oldblivion.

Brandon, for some reason I didnt get your email. Maybe things are
just going slow today. It isnt in my bulk mail either.

You might want to try it again.

Im at work until 5:30 (EST) but I'll send you my save file later.

Keep in mind that the test was done just in that exact spot. I didnt
move around at all for the benchmarks, just so I could get them as
consistant as possible (and it was the perfect area for this test).

By the way, if you didnt include them in your reply email, Id be
interested in seeing the results you recorded in this area. My
brother has a very similar system to mine except he has a 4200+ @
2.5Ghz, and I havent seen any real difference in performance in the
cities there either.

Did you try using my .ini file as well? Maybe I did something really
stupid and broke the game with a setting... though many other people
have similar results to mine, so I doubt thats it.

I just relied to your email. Please send me a copy of your saved
game. I ran multiple demo runs through the exact same area with more
characters on-screen even and I can't get even close to what you're
seeing. Your results are shocking actually and I'd like to check it
out firsthand for the updated article.

mabey the pc is a better option than xbox 360.most people have to
just upgrade to a 300 pound x1900xt instead of a 360. No needs to
upgrade the cpu e.g.like a amd 64 2800. Any games which are cpu
limited will cope easlity with a x1900xt

Hi,

I appreciate your article about testing, however why in the Part 2
you didn't test also SLI or CrossFire configuration.

It seems especially interesting in higher resolutions and we (users)
could check out if dual GPU/dual core configuration improves
performance a lot.
