» Aircraft carrier out of ice planned

Ok, it was planned in World War 2, and it's not really new news, but I figure not many people knew about it, but the Allied forces were researching to build a mega-carrier out of wood-pulp-fortified ice. So, they wanted to conduct warfare on an iceberg? Wouldn't the landing planes skid right off the deck?

Didn't they show this in History Channel? Nice idea, but nothing like a good napalm on the deck can end the party early.

All aircraft carriers at the start of the war were wood-decked - Saratoga, Lexington, that era. Wood doesn't melt, but then again, ice isn't combustible. Heh, drop a bomb on either and they lose capability. There were worse problems to worry about.

Being a large lump of ice, most of the bulk of it would be below the water line, and I would imagine not affected a great deal. The thing wouldn't sink. Although a napalm attack would probably kill a lot of the personnel on the deck, and make the deck unsuitable for take off and landing. I guess it would only take some sort of small bulldozer to scrape out a new deck though.

I know. But the flight deck just needs to be damaged long enough for the enemy fleet to come close for a full attack.
