Gran Turismo 4 High-Res Update
October 18, 2003 Marcus Yam

Summary: Gran Turismo 4 is the PlayStation 2 game we’re ALL waiting for. Unfortunately, it seems that we’ll have to wait a little longer than we had originally expected, as Gran Turismo 4 is now slated for a Summer 2004 release. We have some updated, high resolution images for your viewing pleasure. We also have some photos of Polyphony Digital working on real cars just to show that they’re not sitting around playing GT3 all day. Click-shift!

Limited slip release datePage:: ( 1 / 4 )

In our previous look at Gran Turismo 4, we were told that it would be coming this winter. While those hoping that it’d arrive in time to fit neatly under the Christmas tree were obviously delusional, it seems that those of us expecting it for the winter season are also a bit too optimistic. Our latest fact sheet now slates Gran Turismo 4 as a Summer 2004 release. Too bad… but to sooth the pain, we have some updated and/or high resolution images for your viewing pleasure.

Wallpaper worthy

Here are some images that you’ve seen before, but now at a resolution high enough to fill 1600 pixels across. (Be sure to click for the high-res version in our image viewer.)

The famous breathtaking Grand Canyon shot. Obviously, GT4 will feature some gorgeous backdrops.

[image]
<% print_image("02"); %>
Mini Cooper in Japan during dawn or dusk. The lighting looks very good… almost too good.

<% print_image("03"); %>
Ahh, the lovely Peter Steven’s redesigned WRX front-end. Those bamboo stalks look good… almost too good.

SIDEBAR: The Italian Job is the coolest Mini Cooper commercial ever.

Cleaner shotsPage:: ( 2 / 4 )
These shots were featured in our preview, but the ones here are much cleaner and crisper as they were most likely taken from the frame buffer instead of a capture card.

Grand Canyon Rally

[image]

<% print_image("04"); %><% print_image("05"); %><% print_image("06"); %>
These shots are a better representation of what the Grand Canyon stage will really look like.

Tsu-ku-ba

<% print_image("07"); %><% print_image("08"); %><% print_image("09"); %>
<% print_image("10"); %><% print_image("11"); %><% print_image("12"); %>
<% print_image("13"); %>
Nissans, Hondas, Mazdas, and a lone Subaru on Tsukuba Circuit. These shots are comparable to those found in GT3.

SIDEBAR: Is it a Honda NSX or an Acura NSX?

Newer mediaPage:: ( 3 / 4 )
A couple more high resolution shots 1600 pixels wide. Unlike the previous batch, the environments on these look a little bit more believable from PlayStation 2 hardware. The car models themselves, however, continue to look absolutely fantastic.

A little long for wallpaper

[image]

<% print_image("14"); %>
The good ole’ R34 M-Spec. The next generation GT-R is featured in GT Concept, but maybe we’ll finally get to see the R35 in GT4?

[image]
<% print_image("15"); %>
The SWRT car on tarmac. If you look closely enough, you can see a little piggy face on the side mirrors!

Better backgrounds

[image]

<% print_image("16"); %><% print_image("17"); %>
<% print_image("18"); %><% print_image("19"); %>
<% print_image("20"); %>
More shots better representing what the game will actually look like. The backgrounds and environments are definitely a step above of GT3’s.

SIDEBAR: The ATESSA ET-S AWD system from the Skyline will soon be available in the “Skylines” here, starting with the Infiniti G35x this December.

Behind the scenesPage:: ( 4 / 4 )
What we have for you now are some high resolution “behind the scenes” photographs of Polyphony Digital gathering all sorts of data and information to make Gran Turismo 4 an even more realistic driving simulator. (Be sure to click for the high-res version in our image viewer.)

<% print_image("23"); %><% print_image("24"); %>
<% print_image("25"); %>

For better wheelism?

As detailed in our preview, Logitech will be launching a special steering wheel that offers 2.5 turns lock-to-lock with GT4’s release.

<% print_image("26"); %><% print_image("27"); %>

That’s all we have for now. You can bet this won’t be the last you’ll hear about Gran Turismo 4 in the coming months. Hopefully a firmer release date will be announced soon. Knowing Polyphony Digital, if GT4 slips beyond Summer 2004, then it could run the risk of being further postponed to be a PlayStation 3 launch title. Maybe history will repeat itself in a similar fashion to the GT2/3 and PSone/PS2 transition.
