Unreal Tournament 2004 Optimization Guide
May 21, 2004 Stathi Chaffie Papadopoulos

Summary: Looking to get the most performance out of Epic's Unreal Tournament 2004 but don't know where to start? Then Stathi's optimization guide is for you! Included are performance results with all the settings, on Athlon XP and Pentium 4 setups, and with cards ranging from the GeForce4 MX440 up to the RADEON 9800 XT. Check it out here!

Introduction and Test Bed SetupPage:: ( 1 / 8 )

Testbed setup and explanation

Since my Need for Speed Underground Optimization Guide, I have upgraded my hardware (video cards) and am now running these benchmarks using two separate dedicated machines. Below are the pictures of the machines, cards, and a listing of all the hardware in each of them. Here we go!

Pre-Game Attributes

Below I have posted the pre-game attributes and settings for all ATI cards to give you a better understanding of how this machine is setup prior to initialization of UT2K4.

*Test Notes: This is not a video card comparison article, but an optimization guide for various cards. Value cards were tested at 800x600 and 1024x768. Mainstream cards tested at 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024. The high-end card was tested at 1024x768 and 1280x1024. All cards were tested using both normal and maximum (highest, high) settings under the video options menu of the main menu. All resolutions are at 32-bit using the default Direct3D option. Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering were enabled only on the RADEON 9800XT to keep the article at a reasonable length.

Main Menu, Texture and Character DetailPage:: ( 2 / 8 )

Main Menu

After the intro we will finally hit the Main Menu screen. From this point, we can join a game, host one, start a quick game, play Single Player, visit the UT community web page, change settings, or exit. From here we will click on settings and see what UT has to offer in terms of customizing video (and boy there’s a ton).

Settings in Depth

Texture Detail:

Texture detail determines the level of detail in each level. This applies to everything on screen: ground, sky, objects like buildings and trees, and vehicles. Obviously, this is one of the most important settings in the game. The higher you set this, the better the game will look in general.

Changes how much character detail will be rendered. For instance, textures on the character will be smoother and more defined. Imagine looking at a blurry picture of a person and being able to sharpen it to notice more and more detail(facial features, armor, logos)..

World Detail:

This attribute changes the level of detail, the complexity of the terrain, and the optical geometry and effects. This will make a leaf look like a leaf, not a blurred green spade. Also makes objects like trees, arenas in general, and objects look more defined and natural in shape and form.

Dynamic Mesh LOD:

Adjusts how aggressively character and vehicle details are reduced at a distance. Higher settings increase the distance at which details are reduced, possibly improving visual detail at a cost in performance. Simply put, things that are seen in the distance have more detail with this setting turned up, thus improving the way the game looks.

Decal Stay:

No need for pictures on this one. This attribute specifies how long a decal (bullet hole, a shell, a rocket blast, etc..) will stay on screen before erased.

Character Shadows:

Specifies whether the full character shadow will be shown, a blob shadow(less detail but still gives a shadow effect), or no shadow at all. I recommend turning this to blob if you have a mainstream or value card.

Decals:

Do you want to see weapon scarring and other effects? If so, turn it on! This is CPU dependant also, so if you have a slower CPU you may experience slowdowns in big fight scenes. Same will apply if you have a very old video card.

Trilinear Filtering, Projectors, Foliage, Weather EffectsPage:: ( 6 / 8 )

Trilinear Filtering:

Easiest way to describe this is to use an example. Take a level that has tiling in it, and move forward and backward looking at the tiles. As you move farther away, the detail in each tile will progressively blend in with the one closer to you, thus we get a filtering effect. This is used to make the transition between the tiles less noticeable, making it look more realistic.

The following results are based on trying to maintain the best possible picture quality and framerate during gameplay. On value cards, we are shooting for best possible quality with at least 30FPS. Mainstream cards are trying to get as much quality as possible also, but at higher resolutions. With the flagship we are definitely running with the same features and seeing what will happen once we enable Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering.

Starting with...

High-end Cards: ATI Radeon 9800XT, GeForce FX 5950 Ultra
-These cards don’t need much optimizing with this game. You can still run these with AA and AF maxed out and all in-game settings set to maximum and enjoy the game with great frames per second. Go ahead and crank these suckers to max and kick some tail!

Mainstream Cards: ATI Radeon 9500 Pro/8500, GeForce FX 5700U/Ti4200
-The Radeon 9500 was easily handling all in game settings maxed out on all resolutions. You may even be able to enjoy smooth gameplay with some AA and AF enabled, depending on your machine. The 5700Ultra could be played with all settings maxed out also, but on a slower machine you may need to untick Projectors, especially on higher resolutions. Projectors can make a big difference when it comes to framerate. On the Ti4200, I would max out texture, world, and physics detail, and leave all the other settings as is, but don’t go beyond 1024x768 with these settings. If you have a slower machine and this is not sufficient for smooth gameplay, untick Projectors. As for the 8500, this one took a big hit in some of the benchmarks. I would max out texture detail, and leave the rest as is, especially if you’re going to try to run this game at past 1024x768.

Value Cards: GeForce 4 MX440 8X
-Ah, the value MX4408X…. Surprisingly, this card beat out the 8500 in some of the tests, especially @ 1024x768. I would say do not go beyond 1024, max everything out, and if you don’t get sufficient gameplay out of this, untick Projectors and set shadows to Blob.

*Remember some of these game settings are very CPU dependent, so a faster machine than the ones used in these tests will provide better results.

*Quick Tip: If you have 512Mb or less of system memory, here’s a quickie to help speed up the game. Double click on your UT2004 ini file and set UsePrecaching=False under [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] This will disable texture storage in ram. It will slow level loads but you will notice a significant increase in level speed.

As stated in my previous article, the flagships still fair great with everything turned on and settings in their respective control panels set to maximum. But you should expect that, especially for most current First Person Shooters. The Mainstream cards, and boy do they range from great to bad, need the most tweaking, especially when trying to get the best possible picture and framerate. The Value card in this article gets two thumbs up, because it surprisingly matched up pretty good with some of the mainstream cards.

As for Unreal Tournament 2004: It rocks… So many different modes of play, so many mutators, maps, and options. I loved playing this game and never had a dull moment. It kept me coming back for more, even after the arduous task of sitting through hours and hours of seeing the same benchmark on my screen. I hope you guys enjoy this article, I sure did enjoy making it. Until next time, this is Stathi signing off!

*Special Thanks to Rashly for some of his input and his superior knowledge.

*Note: This is not a video card comparison article, but a tweaking guide for various cards. Overclocking your video card may result in higher FPS, but may also lead to display corruption.
