Great for what it does - smashing action!

Rating:
85%
by: FS-Pongky ( July 23, 2003 )
» Pros
Surprisingly lots of moves and you can react with any object on the screen - lots of things are destructible
Decal work is great - when you jump and stomp, or you do your dashing-punch move, the floor gets cracked and damage appearance remains.
Easy to overlook the out-of-place cel-shading
The levels are semi-open ended, which means for the most part, you can stay and kill as many people as your want or simply kill a few and go on to the next stage - the level of carnage is simply up to you

» Cons
Semi trite and slow-paced Bruce Banner missions - I'm here to smash things and people up, not sneak around like some rat.
Should be more "Rage" moves, other than the two special moves.
Story is too transparent ( I guess like the comics )

It's nice that the enemies leave for you green orbs (life) and red orbs (rage), you can keep killing forever if you wanted to.

You can throw anything to anything in this game, which is great. When you pick up a throwable item - guard, box, car, pieces of an Apache copter, you can choose the target to which you should hurtle the thing.

Another good thing about the Hulk is the different number of moves you can do. In normal mode (not during the rage frenzy), you can do:
Jump stomp, jump downward-punch, hop floor smash, punch combo and sonic clap. These moves are further enhanced by holding the key to charge them, so they become much more powerful when you release. I think it's cool when you float in the air as you charge your attack, and the puny soldiers cower in their tracks.

When you pick up different enemies, there are different things you can do with them. With the puny soldiers, you have the option to floor-slam them, bitch-slap them or chuck them at other guards. Oh, it's funny when you throw guards off the skyscrapers, they go "AAaah!". With blue-skinned mutants, you can back-break them or double-floor slam them (while hitting their buddies). The mutant dogs can't be picked up, but you grab and knee them instantly when you try to pick them up.

The graphics are pretty good, with dynamic lighting and shadows and unique cel-shaded characters. Though, yes, as it was pointed out in the review, it's odd that only the characters were cel-shaded.

So, with all this carnage there are plenty of explosions that offset the drab locales. Overall, I think this succeeds as a fun , fast, action game ( though the bruce banner puzzles and sneaking should be optional , but it helps the skimpy storyline ) that is easily playable by the casual gamer. Just as long as you don't look too deeply into it you'll be fine.
