eeeeeeer...i struggle to think of a single thing that actually worked well or above average.

hm where to start?
Lets start with basic gameplay concepts:
1) Powerups and Weapons and Health.
Health: There are occassional Health packs in a game where simple standing still allows you to regenerate 100 health in under 10 seconds. These are not useful, either do one or the other not both.
Focus: Im sure i went thro the whole game using focus every time i fired a bullet, or if i was bored or even slightly frustrated with the overtly piss easy levels i would just "go mad" and leave it off, the simple fact is when your most potent weapon in the game, focus, regenerates and renders you able to take in your surroundings at a rate that the computer controlled opponents do not even react to your pressence before they die, and the fact that focus is pretty much akin to a time bending aimbot, there really is no point.
Weapons: More guns please, A lot more guns.
your standard pistols sub machine gun machine gun sniper set of rubbish. The only thing about the guns i actually went "ooooh cool, was the pseudo Infra-Red scope on the sniper." but WAIT they even managed to mess that up to, as when u pick up the scope your opperator proceeds to tell you to pick up the scope even after you are using it.
Hand to Hand: Ok, the camera sucks, its jittery too far away and first person mode is screwed due to the massive sensitivity of it compared to third person.
There is next to no skill involved in actually pulling off the flash moves that wow'd you in the matrix movies, a simple sequence of something like jump right hold right and jump next to a wall while holding fire, lead to you doing a cartwheel while firing, and then wall running while firing. Fighting "big boss's" such as Cujo, a demented vampire, consisted of holding down focus and alternating punch and kick, cujo does have one element of cool in that he dodged your lunge kick, this is cool factor is easily sidelined by punching firstand then kicking.
No enemy actually gives you a real challenge, at all. i was played on normal difficulty, and it played rather like street fighter the fist time you play, you win and do all these amazing moves but you dont understand why.
2) Level Design
I fail to see where all the technology that was used to make the oh so awesome burly brawl seen so awesome in The Matrix: Reloaded went, and on the massive budget that this game had im very surprised to see bland, flat and dull texturing, innane layout and little or no use of multiple floors, or multiple
objectives. Most of the game was A to B, with maybe a little "protect your ally" or "rescue a friend".
3) The Hacking subgame.
One of those wow cool factors of this game that fell on its face and was blatently designed for console users was the Hacking subgame. i timed myself the second time around doing the hacking task, it took me precisly 5 minutes 32 seconds to get to the point where i was to type EMP, and it didnt take me much longer the first time. It was shallow, blatently easy, and futile. Apparently if you do your research around the EnterTheMatrix.com website you can find some tidbits here and there to give you extra content, frankly i dont care.
Car Chases: One thing that really put me off about the car chases was as playing as Ghost, Niobe's driving was scarily bad, and very frustrating, the ai turned the car over at least 6 times not couting the numerous 8 point turns etc etc, in the first car chase and the supposedly hot on your heals cops still didnt catch me. Needless to say, after completing as Niobe and then running in this blunder of game design and programing i hammered alt+f4 as fast as possible after this level, i was done with this game, that was the final straw.
Other:
Agents, more like zzzz, no real difficulty here, there are supposed to be the elite embeded matrix protection systems, and yet they sucked so bad, neither adding depth or difficulty.

The FMV's and story are the only redeeming factors about this game, and most likely the only reason that someone will buy this game in 2 months time, just to say your've seen all the matrix footage available.
It pains me to give this game a bad review, due to my undying love for the movies. It therefore recieves my "shoot on sight" award for extremely bad game design and implementation. |
