Graphics: Without a doubt, Unreal 2 possesses some of the most beautiful graphics seen to date in a PC game. The lighting, the textures, you name it, it's all high quality.
Level design: Unreal 2 boasts some of the most intricate and well designed levels I've seen in quite some time. The sheer look of the levels alone was enough to stun me. In particular, the alien homeworld blew my mind. It looked like something straight out of Aliens.
Storyline: While pretty standard, the story did have some twists in it to keep you on your toes and it's one of the better stories I've seen in an FPS, simply for the fact that most FPS' lack stories of any kind bc they're all multiplayer.
Dialogue/Characters: I felt the dialogue to be interesting at times and I noticed I chuckled every now and then. The characters seemed right in place. Yes, you can't skip the level briefings but that's a minor inconvience. Voice acting was about the standard fare for a FPS.

Slight repitition: The game has a small sense of repitition to it in the sense that you're constantly looking for artifacts. Fortunately, every level is not like that and there are a number of different tasks you have to accomplish on certain levels.
Length: At about 6-8 hours, this game was too short for tastes. It left me wanting more. If this was about the length of the original Unreal, it would've been great.

I recently picked up Unreal 2 and I can't understand why there was so much negativity towards this game. First off, the whole issue about the lack of "originality" in weapons is a moot point. FPS' have always used the same type of weaponry since Doom. At least Unreal 2 adds some flavor to it with alternate fire modes. And they also introduce some unique weapons. Some are just pure fun, but others are actually useful.
Secondly, the whole issue about there being no multiplayer is also ridiculous. That's what UT2K3 is for. Sure, a co-op mode would be nice, but it isn't necessary. The game was made to be a SINGLEPLAYER FPS. Again, that's why they created UT2K3. That argument is like ppl ripping on Tribes 2 bc it doesn't have a single player component. Guess what, it wasn't made to be single player, just like Unreal 2 wasn't made to be multiplayer.
I seriously can't understand what ppl found to be wrong with this game. It was fun, interesting, and entertaining as hell, even if it was only for a short time. It also gave my R9500P a reason for being in my rig. Maybe ppl rated this game so bad because it was supposed to be one of those "big game" FPS'. All I know is, I loved the game and I'll probably play it over even though I know what already happens.
Is Unreal 2 one of the great FPS' of our time? That's debatable. Is it garbage worthy of all this negativity? Definitely not. Simply put: this game owns. |
