New, dense texture maps on most surfaces, very impressive.
Spooky as hell.
The first Doom to have a story engine.
| » Cons | | |
Too dark throughout.
VERY repetive gameplay.
Monsters move around too quickly making them very hard to get a good look at them and then after you kill them, they turn into a glowing ash and vanish. This affect is a ripoff from the movie Blade.
The sound affect in that big generator room scene is a bit of a ripoff from Contact.
The flashlight bit is real pain in the ass.
The charactors heads still have the old blocky look.

No, no they will never release the perfect game will they? They do this so you will get tired of it after a while and then you go out and buy a new one. It's just the car companies building cars out of regular steel so they rust and you go out and buy a new one. Gee the transit buses never rust and some are over 30 years old! Doom 3 was very much over hyped and I doubt that they worked all this time on the game. They just waited later until hardware was powerfull enough run it. I mean soon as the Geforce 6800 series comes out this game gets released. Frustrating? It is a bit for people who just paid over $300 for an eight pipline card only to get superceded with the new 16 pipeline cards. Maybe in ten to twenty years from now, the computer electronics will be just a simple module in a monitor and not this big box with electronics that continously become obselete.
Doom 3 has a very impressive beginning but once the story starts unfolding and you start fighting the bad guys the game goes down hill really fast with very poorly lit scenes throughout the game and very repetive gameplay, some of the monsters have a bleached out look to them. There are a few but very brief outside scenes. In the dark you are forced to use this hopless, shitty little flashlight in the 24 century? Hay, Johnny (Jonn Carmak)wake up! There is this spooky type man's voice that talks to you as you progress through the game and he gets annoying after a while.
The end bosses look pretty neat though.
No, don't expect to get the editor up and running in a "jiffy". The pos editor doesn't work properly right out of the box. You need to fart around with special gameboot lines in this shortcut icon. The developers are just jerking around and made the editor hard to use so you won't get to far with it.
This game will have little replay value after you played it once. Although the brief beginnig of the game is impressive, I don't know if the rest of the game in which is 20 hours of corridore shooting in the dark is worth 50 bucks. |
