I've been hearing great reviews for Chronicles of Riddick: EFBB, so I decided to grab myself a copy. Surprisingly enough, it was a good game!
On to the review! First off, the game has a great in depth story to it. A lot of interesting characters to tell you some bits about Butcher Bay (the prison you're in) and how everything in Butcher Bay worked.
There are three main gameplay elements in this game: stealth, adventure, and action. In some ways I felt that this game had a Thief: The Dark Project feel to it. Anyhow, the game incorporates these gameplay elements together pretty well. At some points you may be talking to your cell mates to get some tips. At some points you may be even sneaking around to get pass those prison guards, so that you won't cause any extra unwanted entanglement. At the rest of the points, you're just gung-ho and shoot anybody that opposes you.
The graphics in the game kind of resembles Doom 3, but it lacks per pixel lighting, but overall it still looks terrific. Unfortunately few of the models in the game were poorly created, so they ended up looking like box shaped humans.
Now when I finally beat the game. I didn't notice that I unlocked commentary mode, until I read some of the PC reviews, so I fired up the game again... and to my surprise there was comments from the developers. Although they have a heavy accent... they're understandable and hilarious! They really do give you some insights about developing games!
Now there were some things that got me down when I played this game. Like I said, it had a Thief: The Dark Project feel, so the game controls were pretty clunky for me... especially in melee combat, but that mostly a personal preference.
There were a few graphical glitches, such as torn textures and shadows. This is very minor though. Not many were really seen in this game, but it gets annoying when they flicker.
All in all, the game does a great job for a single player. Would've been interesting if it had a multiplayer component. Definitely better than Doom 3, but not quite as fun as Half-Life. Probably in the Far Cry zone. |
