Where do i start? Very difficult menu, 90% of the cheat codes i found don't work.

bought this the other day for my 5yo. we have been stuck in the attic (near the beginning of stage 1) looking for the final 2 apples for almost 2 days now. frustrating? just a bit. i've been a casual gamer since the days of Atari - and i am clueless! this is a kids game? we know to use smell vision - so we know where the last 2 apples are - in the crates... but how in the hell do you get inside?!?!?!? PLEASE HELP!!!!
