Takes the great things from AoE and incorporates them (game is so similar to AoE or AoM that I hopped right in and figured the game out in 10 mins).
Has some cool things from Civ2, such as Wonders (that weren't mentioned in the review), which actually give you bonuses.
Does everything right that Empire Earth didn't! (games are about an hour long, on average, and thats having gone through all the ages; plus, balance is wayyy better)

Game gets very choppy with 4+ players all attacking each other
GameSpy sucks... AoM has a much better matchmaking service! I mean, even the chatbox is laggy in GameSpy!!
Game doesn't like to play on LAN if you have 2 ip addresses (2 LAN cards, or a modem connected to the 'net while trying to play RoN... i had to disable my modem in Device Manager to play LAN)

Overall, I love this game. Much better than AoM, more balanced than WC3, much faster (and more fun) than EE... it's the most evolved RTS i've played. I definately recommend this to avid Civ2/AoE2 fans!
I gave this a 95 mostly due to the GameSpy matchmaking. i can't say how much i dislike GS... hopefully, in the future (or maybe in a patch? unlikely...) they will do something similar to Battle.net in WC3 or the matchmaking in AoM. The LAN probs are annoying, but expected after AoM. |
