A Nvidia product gets a Bull's Eye award?

Rating:

» Pros
Ok so it's a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra video card that finally doesn't use a PCI slot. Even if most PC users don't use the PCI slot next to their video card, it's nice to have open.

The game bundle is also very nice, and the mouse is a pretty good deal too. Those games are very good games too. Not some under rated game that didn't make the cut so it's bundle with everything from video cards to mice.

A 5900 Ultra is also very fast. Cause you know when buying a $500+ video card you should really get a lot of band for your buck. In this case your spending almost $600 for a video card. So at least you know that because you spent every dime you have on a video card, that at least future games like Hl2 will run at a good speed.

» Cons
Ok first off a Nvidia Geforce FX product has been awarded the Bull's Eye award. I question this award because in the past few months Nvidia has been under fire for a lot of things and I'm not just talking about driver cheats.

Lots of developers have said that while Geforce FX products support Pixel Shader 2.0 they have been having problem with some shader effects. Nvidia did say they would fix the problem, but no driver update has shown this fix yet. Also Half Life 2 has said that since Nvidia doesn't support Centroid Sampling that they may need to trade off some pixel shader bandwidth to clamp the texture coordinates.

Ohh and lets talk about the $600 price tag on a video card. Seriously how can you even give this card an award for a price tag of $600? How can you question the price tag when it comes with so much. Video games, and a mouse is very nice, but most people have their own games. I'm also pretty sure they have their own mice as well. Probably better mice too.

I can only think of two reasons for anyone to want to buy this card.

A: You have lots of money to spend, and you want the most expensive video card on the market.

B: Your a Nvidia fan boy who wants to make 10 easy payments on a video card.

While ATI holds the crown in "best video card to own", Geforce FX cards are usually more expensive then ATI cards. If you look back at the benchmarks you will see that ATI card and Nvidia cards don't perform so different. Even when ATI does win most of the time. Also those benchmarks don't show you how terrible the Geforce FX cards are with Pixel shaders.

Do your self a favor. Order your self a Radeon 9800 Pro for $323. Radeon 9700 Pro is now $256 and they aren't bad as in say performance. You also don't need 256 megs of memory. Waste of money and the extra memory chips just produce heat and eat watts.
